Manufactured circa 1867-1868, this is an example of a Type I, Transitional (aka Model 1 First Variant) over/under Remington derringer. Remington manufactured only about 100 of these derringers. The left side center rib is marked "ELLIOT'S PATENT DEC. 12, 1865" and the right side rib "E.REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y.". The matching serial number is marked on the frame under the grips and on the underside of the barrel. The left side is fitted with a manual extractor. All nickel finish, blade front and notch rear sights and fitted with smooth rosewood grips.
Good. The derringer retains strong traces of original nickel finish in protected areas with the balance having been cleaned some time ago and showing some scattered minor pitting. The grips are very good with a few minor dents and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is fine. A rarely observed highly desirable O/U derringer.
