Description:

This is an example of an extremely variation of therare Smith & Wesson First Model Model 3 American revolver shipped to the Nashville, Tennessee Police department. Only 32 were manufactured with a 6 inch barrel and were factory engraved "NASHVILLE POLICE" on the back strap as well as a number. This particular revolver is "No3." of 32 special order revolvers. The top of the barrel rib is marked with the one line address and patent dates. The serial number is marked on the butt and the matching assembly number "A9" is marked on the rear cylinder face, barrel and barrel latch. A very small period repair is visible on the underside of the ejector housing on the frame. The aforementioned "NASHVILLE POLICE No3." is on the back strap. The accompanying factory letter verifies that serial number 3485 was shipped to K.J. Morris, Mayor of Nashville, Nashville, TN. on May 6, 1871 with a 6 inch barrel, blue finish, smooth walnut grips and engraved "Nashville Police" along with a number on the back strap. The shipment was for 32 units at the cost of $17.00 each.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The revolver retains 30% original blue finish concentrated in the protected areas and the sides of the frame, with a smooth mottled brown patina on the balance. Overall there are a few minor scratches and dings. The grips are good with some chipping and wear on the lower edges and a few overall small minor pressure dents. The markings are clear. Mechanically fine. These revolver saw many years of service with the Nashville P.D. A solid example of an extremely rare Nashville Police Department contract No. 3 First Model American revolver. Originally the raest variation of all the large frame number 3s. This writer can not recall ever seeing another in his 18 years of collecting Smith & Wessons.
