This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1889. The rifle has the very desirable color casehardened receiver, casehardened forearm cap, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate with blue 26-inch octagon barrel, full length magazine, bolt and loading gate. The stock and forearm are straight grain walnut with a varnish finish. The barrel has a standard dovetail mounted front sight with nickel-silver blade and a sporting style rear sight with serrated edges and a sliding sight notch insert. A Lyman folding combination rear sight with coarsely knurled post is mounted on the receiver tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "40-82 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat between the rear sight and the receiver. The "1884" and "1885" patent dates are roll stamped in two lines on the underside of the receiver behind the trigger. The serial number "41010" is stamped in script numerals in front of the rear tang screw. Model 1886 Winchester rifles chambered for the .40-82 W.C.F. cartridge are scarce.
