Fine London Armory J. KERR Inscribed Winchester First Model 1876 Lever Action Carbine

This is an example of a Winchester First Model 1876 Carbine that was manufactured in 1877. The left side plate is retailer engraved "LONDON ARMORY/JAs KERR & Co/54 KING WILLIAM St. E.C." in three lines. London "Crown/CP" and "Crown/V" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel and a "Crown/V" inspection mark is stamped on the top of the receiver. The carbine has the early First Model receiver with round top, no provision for a dust cover and distinctive full length forearm with spring-fastened barrel band and special forearm cap. A saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The barrel has a steel block style front sight and non-adjustable leaf rear sight with 100, 300 and 500 yard apertures. The barrel, barrel bands and receiver are blue and the hammer, lever and carbine style buttplate have a casehardened finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with an oil finish. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "MODEL 1876" is roll-stamped in fancy letters on the upper receiver tang. The serial number, "2838" is stamped in script letters behind the lever latch.

ConditionFine. The carbine retains 50% of the original blue and casehardened finish, the balance of the finish is a dark, plum brown patina. The metal surfaces are smooth and free from pitting. The edges are sharp. The loading gate has 70% of the original fiery niter blue finish. The screw heads are excellent. The stock and forearm are very good and show only light handling wear. The Winchester barrel legend, model designation and serial number are sharp. The lightly engraved London Armory markings are fully legible. The London proof and view marks are sharp. This is a fine example of both an original and scarce Winchester First Model 1876 Lever Action Carbine.
