Description:

Cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver manufactured in 1854 and factory engraved by Gustave Young or his shop. The revolver has a blue finish with casehardened loading lever, frame and hammer. The brass trigger guard and back strap are silver-plated. The barrel has a dovetail mounted, nickel-silver, front sight blade and is fitted with a one-piece ivory grip. The five-shot cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". A dot that indicates the component was designated for engraving or special finish is stamped either above or below the serial number on the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap. "SAML COLT" is engraved in Old English letters on the top of the barrel surrounded by engraved flourishes. "COLTS/PATENT" is engraved in a two-line, half-circle on the left side of the frame in a panel formed by punch-dots and scrollwork. The sides of the barrel lug, rear portions of the upper barrel flats, sides of the loading lever, frame, hammer, trigger guard and back strap are engraved with Gustave Young's distinctive Germanic scrollwork on a punch-dot background. Fanciful animal heads are concealed in the scrollwork on the left side of the frame and right side of the barrel lug. The sides of the hammer are engraved with a wolf head motif. The deluxe engraving includes the screw heads on the frame, barrel lug and lever and an engraved border on the muzzle. The serial number "91450" is located on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard and back strap and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The mahogany, American style, case is lined with Navy blue velvet and has five compartments. The case contains: (1) a blued, iron, double cavity, bullet mold with "COLT'S/PATENT" on the sprue cutter, (2) powder flask with fixed charger and eagle and shield motif embossed on both sides but no "Colt's Patent" markings, (3) key, (4) lead, .31 caliber balls and (4) non-factory wooden handle screw-driver.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus overall with fine original engraving. The cylinder retains most of the roll engraved scene. The forward edge of the cylinder has a number of shallow dents. The safety pins are absent and the percussion nipples have heavy flash pitting. The barrel, loading lever, frame, hammer and cylinder have a dark patina. There is moderate flash pitting on the sides of the hammer. Traces of casehardened finish are visible on protected areas of the frame and loading lever. The trigger guard and back strap retain 60% of the silver-plated finish. The hammer screw is a replacement. The ivory grip is in fine condition with an attractive patina. The grip has shrunk slightly from the edges of the grip strap. The left side of the grip has several hairline stress lines present in the heel and side and four minor nicks. The hammer will not hold at half-cock. The case exterior is in very good condition with numerous small handling dents and a crack that runs across the top of the lid. The interior is in good condition; the lining is not faded and wear is limited to compression marks from the revolver and several minor rips in the lining from contact with the hammer and front sight. The bullet mold and flask are in good condition with moderate wear. This is a nice example of a factory cased Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver with factory engraved by the premier 19th Century American firearms engraver Gustave Young or his shop.
