This is a Class 3 special order Super Grade Model 70 rifle in 300 Winchester Magnum caliber that was never factory cataloged. The rifle could be considered a cross-style meaning that the rifle was built with standard production components, but assembled in such a way that the finished product created an atypical style which was never cataloged. The serial number may have been out of the production sequence. The .300 Winchester Magnum caliber was authorized in September 1962 with rifles of standard grade only first shipped in early 1963. (Included with the rifle is a Winchester 1963 catalog that first introduced the .300 Magnum caliber Model 70.) These rifles were know as Westerner-Alaskan rifles with 4,916 having been manufactured. Only three authentic Super Grade Westerner-Alaskan rifles are known. This rifle has hooded ramp front and adjustable folding leaf rear sights with the receiver tapped for sight/scope mounting. It has standard barrel Winchester markings on the left side with the factory proof on the barrel and receiver at the breech and "-SUPER GRADE-" on the floor plate. The underside of the barrel is stamped "SUPER" and "458" stamped on the recoil lug identifies the receiver as a short magnum. The jewelled bolt with jewelled extractor is numbered to the gun, has a matte blue hollow knob and original factory bolt tag numbered to the gun. The follower is also jeweled. The Monte Carlo stock is checkered and features quick release sling swivels and ebony forend tip, all typical features of a Super Grade Model 70. The stock is fitted with a factory recoil pad correct for the era. Included with the rifle is the shipping box, original factory box numbered to the gun, instructions pamphlet, R.L. Wilson's book WINCHESTER: AN AMERICAN LEGEND, and African big game print signed "Good Hunting! Gary Bogue." The factory box yellow end is ink stamped "SPECIAL", confirming the Super Grade features of this extremely rare Model 70 (see image).
