Manufactured by James M. Burnie, this fine quality fowling piece(approximately 14 gauge) features a unique grip safety mounted on the lower tang behind the trigger guard. The Damascus barrel features a bead sight on the concave solid rib marked "J.M. Burnie Berwick" at the breech end ahead of scroll engraving. It has a solid under rib and three ramrod pipes securing a wooden ramrod with brass tip. The breech plug has gold inlaid bands and floral leaf engraving. The lock has scroll engraving, with a game bird scene and marked "J.M. Burnie, BERWICK". The hammer, barrel tang, trigger guard and grip safety are nicely scroll engraved and the trigger guard plate has an engraved pineapple finial. Mounted with a checkered walnut half straight grip stock with a horn forend cap and steel shotgun buttplate.
Fine. The barrel has half brown finish remaining, showing 60% of the Damascus pattern. All of the gold inlay remains. The trigger guard retains 80% original blue finish. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth grayish patina with flashes of original case colors in the protected areas around the hammer on the lock and some of the original casehardening pattern showing on the grip safety. The stock is very fine with a few minor dents and dings, with sharp checkering. The markings are clear. The action is excellent.
