Exceptional "Historic Friend of Henry Ford" Special Order Factory Engraved and Inscribed Deluxe Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter

Special Order Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1888. The right side of the receiver is inscribed "Made Expressly for/William Ross Tullock." in two lines above the loading gate. Documents that accompany the rifle state that William Ross Tullock was a Scotsman from the Orkney Islands who emigrated to the United States in 1885. Tullock worked as an engineer for the U.S. During his time in the U.S. Tullock met Henry Ford. Tullock returned to Orkney in 1901 and in 1912 used his relationship with Henry Ford to establish the first overseas dealership for the Ford Motor Company. The W.R. Tullock Orkney Car Rental remains in business today. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter which states that this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on October 8, 1888 and returned for repair on October 18, 1908. The letter documents the rifle's numerous special order features which include: single set-trigger, custom stock 1/2 inch longer and with 3/4 inch more drop than regular, pistol grip, cheekpiece, Swiss butt, $4.00 engraving and sling swivels. The barrel, full-length magazine, bolt and loading gate are blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever are color casehardened. The Swiss buttplate is nickel plated. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy grain walnut with "Style H" checkering and ''extra oil" piano finish. The pistol grip has an ebony inlay. The receiver, forearm cap and heel of the Swiss buttplate have the Winchester No. 10 engraving illustrated in the Winchester 1897 "HIGHLY FINISHED ARMS" catalogue. This catalogue is reproduced on pages 209-223 of THE BOOK OF WINCHESTER ENGRAVING by R.L. Wilson. The engraving features a white tail deer in a game scene on the left side of the receiver and fine scrollwork with engraved borders on the top, sides and bottom of the receiver. The full octagon barrel has a standard sporting front sight with nickel-silver blade and a buckhorn sporting rear sight. A folding combination rear sight is mounted on the upper tang. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The top of the barrel just ahead of the receiver is stamped with the caliber designation "45-90 W.F.C.". Oval "W/P" Winchester proofmarks are stamped on the top barrel flat just ahead of the receiver and on the top of the receiver to the left of the engraved scrollwork. The proofmarks were probably applied when the rifle was returned to Winchester in 1908. The lower tang is marked with the two line 1884/1885 patent dates and the script serial number "24468". The sights were apparently changed when the rifle was returned to Winchester because the Cody letter lists the sights as "Rocky Mountain front, Sporting leaf rear and Lyman Blank piece". Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifles with factory engraving, inscriptions and numerous special order features like this rifle are very rare.

ConditionExcellent. The rifle was refinished when it was returned to Winchester in 1908 and remains in exceptional condition. The barrel, magazine, bolt and loading gate retain 98% of the Winchester commercial blue finish. The barrel legend, caliber designation and proofmarks are sharp. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and loading lever have 97% of the vivid case colors intact with some silvering on the bottom of the lever. The factory engraving and inscription are crisp. The highly figured walnut forearm and special order stock have most of the high polish piano finish. There is some minor handling wear on the underside of the forearm between the checkered panels and the receiver and a few scattered and very minor storage marks. The checkering on the stock and forearm is sharp. The buttplate has some very minor edge wear. This is an exceptional example of a fully-documented Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle with an unusual number of significant and rare special order features. It would be hard to find a more unique example of a Winchester Model 1886 rifle with interesting automobile associated history.
