Description:

Winchester Model 1886 Extra Light-Weight Takedown Rifle chambered for the .33 W.C.F. cartridge with extra special order .45-70 light-weight barrel, magazine and forearm. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes it as: "33 caliber", with round barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock with pistol grip, Lyman leaf and combination rear sight with cup disc, full magazine, shotgun butt with rubber buttplate and "Takedown". The letter describes the extra barrel as: "45/70, 22 inch round barrel, full magazine, extra light weight, fancy checkered forearm, Lyman leaf sight, nickel steel barrel, Winchester high velocity". The letter states this rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on July 28, 1909. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The forearm and pistol grip stock are special order fancy grain walnut with Style H checkering and high polish oiled finish. The stock has a black hard rubber pistol grip cap relief embossed "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO." and a black hard rubber checkered shotgun buttplate with the round Winchester logo embossed in the center. The barrel has a Lyman Hunting front sight with colored insert and a sporting rear sight with adjustable insert and serrated edges. A Lyman folding combination rear sight with cup disc is mounted on the receiver tang. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A-" above the single line 1884 and 1885 patent dates. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The caliber designation, "33 W.C.F.", is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the takedown collar. The 22-inch light-weight .45-70 barrel and magazine have the same Winchester blue finish and highly figured piano finished fancy grain walnut forearm with Style H checkering as the .33 W.C.F. barrel. The barrel has a low profile Winchester sporting rear sight and a Lyman Hunting front sight with replacement Redfield blade. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A. PAT. OCT. 14. 1884.JAN. 20.1885." in two lines ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL" is stamped on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight followed by the caliber designation "45-70". Oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top of both barrels and the receiver. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates and the serial number "145578" are stamped on the lower tang.

Rating Definition:

Extremely fine. The rifle and spare barrel group retain 85% of the original blue and casehardened finish. The 33 W.C.F. barrel has most of the blue finish intact with some thinning and one light scratch on the top and some takedown wear on the magazine below the band. There is some scattered pitting on the left side of the forearm cap. The takedown collar shows more handling wear and retains 40% of the blue finish. The receiver has more than 85% of the blue finish with handling wear on high-points. The blue on the top of the receiver is thinning slightly. The finish on the underside of the receiver has several light scratches and shows slightly more wear. The blue finish on the loading gate has faded to a silver-gray patina. The case colors on the hammer and lever have faded and show wear but remain 85% intact. The stock and forearm are in excellent overall condition and retain more than 90% of the high polish piano finish. The checkering is sharp. Wear is limited to a few minor handling marks. The .45-70 barrel set retains 75% of the original blue finish with some age discoloration along the top of the barrel. Most of the blue finish is present on the takedown collar. There is some finish loss and light pitting on the right side of the magazine ahead of the forearm cap. The right side of the forearm cap has some finish loss and there is light pitting on the bottom. The fancy grain walnut forearm is in excellent condition with sharp checkering and retains 90% or more of the piano finish. This is an outstanding example of a rare Winchester Model 1886 Extra Light-Weight Takedown Rifle with special order extra barrel.
