U.S. Model 1817 Flintlock Rifle

Block mounted iron front sight and dovetail rear sight. The lock plate has a rounded rear and beveled front with detachable brass pan and reinforced cock. The barrel bands, side plate, trigger guard, large oval patch box and buttplate are iron. The lock plate is stamped "MIDDLTn/CONN/1829" and "U.S./S.NORTH." The barrel tang is stamped with a matching "1829" date. The top of the barrel is stamped with "US/JM" and an incised "P" proofmark. An Ordnance final inspection mark consisting of script initials within an oval border is stamped on the left stock flat.

ConditionVery good as reconverted to flintlock. The barrel and lock plate have an attractive brown patina. The surfaces of the barrel, lock and buttplate are generally smooth with some minor flash pitting on the barrel surrounding the flash hole and the hammer. The markings on the lock plate and breech are sharp. The barrel bands, side plate and patch box have a smooth gray-brown patina. The stock is very good with sharp edges and light to moderate handling wear. The Ordnance inspection cartouche on the left stock flat is crisp. The rifle appears to have been converted to percussion during the period of use and expertly reconverted to the original flintlock configuration. This is a fine looking example of a key 19th Century U.S. martial arm.
