Revolutionary War U.S. Surcharged French St Etienne Arsenal Percussion Conversion Fowling Piece

The lock is marked "US" at the rear and "ETIENNE" ahead of the hammer and is lightly engraved with a floral design. The top of the barrel is marked "NOCK 1779" followed by a heart shape with a "4" over it and "V/EI/C" in the heart (Dutch East India Co. logo) and a "crown/GP" and "crown" proof mark. According to the consignor notes the two Revolutionary War muskets were repurposed and "married" into a commercial deluxe percussion fowling piece. Single brass bead sight, solid under rib with three iron ramrod pipes securing the wooden ramrod with iron tulip head, replacement smooth walnut half stock with pewter forend cap and iron buttplate.

ConditionFine as converted to percussion. The metal surfaces have a crisp dark brown patina with some minor oxidation and spotting. There is some minor pitting present around the bolster. The stock remains fine with much of the original varnish crazing. The markings are readable. The action is fine. A unique post Revolutionary War fowling piece.
