Description:

Fixed blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. The top of the receiver is marked "MODEL/1865" and "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PATD MARCH 6 1860/MANUF'D. AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.", and the serial number is marked on top of the receiver next to the hammer. The left rear of the barrel is marked "J.L.C." and most parts are marked with a single letter inspection mark. Stabler cutoff, saddle ring and bar mounted on the left wrist and mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a sling swivel. The left side of the stock behind the saddle ring bar is stamped with two crisp boxed cartouches and the left rear is stamped "T/112". Consignor notes state it may have been issued to Company C 4th Kentucky Infantry 3-1865, although there is no documentation to support the claim. The notes also reference to the U.S. Martial Arms Collector & Springfield Research Newsletter No. 85 page 22. Although most Model 1865 Spencer carbines were delivered too late for use in the Civil War, they were used extensively by cavalry regiments on the frontier until replaced by the U.S. Model 1873 Springfield Carbine.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The barrel retains 90% original blue finish with some fading to plum. The barrel band has some protective coating residue and retains 85% original blue finish. The hammer and frame retain at least 40% original fading case colors, and there is a smooth mottled gray patina on the lock, lever and buttplate. The hammer has been modified by shortening the spur and the front sight is a replacement. The period revarnished wood is fine with scattered minor to moderate dents and dings. The cartouches are sharp as well as the "T/112" marking. The receiver markings are clear. The action is fine.
