Mark I Pedersen Device manufactured by Remington Arms Co., in 1918 for the Model 1903 Mark I rifle. The device is complete with two 40-round magazines, two boxes of 30 auto pistol cartridges for the Model 1918, a stamped steel carrying case and a five pocket web magazine pouch. The Pedersen Device was a semi-automatic blow back bolt with 40-round magazine chambered for a pistol size .30 caliber cartridge. The device was designed to replace the bolt in the specially modified M1903 Mark I rifle and provide the individual infantryman with a short range semi-automatic rifle capable of providing a high volume of suppressive fire. Adopted by the Ordnance Department in early 1918, Pedersen Devices and M1903 Mark I rifles were designated "Top Secret"; the device itself was designated "U.S. Caliber .30 Automatic Pistol of 1918-Mark I". The Army ordered 100,000 Pedersen Devices for use in the 1919 Spring Offensive against the German Army in France. When WWI ended in November 1918, the 65,000 Pedersen Devices manufactured before the contract was terminated were placed in storage and retained the Top Secret classification. In 1931 the Ordnance Department ordered the Pedersen Devices, magazines, cases and accessories destroyed. Records show that 64,873 Pedersen Devices and accessories were destroyed. Only a few Pedersen Devices exist in collections and museums. The stamped metal carrying case is rarer than the Pedersen Device itself; most surviving devices lack a carrying case. The Pedersen Device has a black-green parkerized finish. The cocking piece has serrated edges and a center sight groove. "U.S.A. 1918-MARK I/11436" is roll-stamped on the left side of the sight groove and "REMINGTON-BRIDGEPORT/PEDERSEN'S PAT's. PENDING" is roll stamped on the right side of the sight groove. The final inspection stamp "E.E.C./Eagle Head/44" is stamped on the back of the cocking piece. One magazine is has a smooth black-green parkerized finish and is stamped with the inspection mark "TP" and the other magazine has a rough parkerized finish with no visible inspection marks. The carrying case has a black enamel finish. The Model 1903 Mark I rifles manufactured for use with the Pedersen device has a special receiver with an oval ejection port in the left side and a shallow clearance cut in the stock below the ejection port. Mark I rifles also had a specially designed magazine cut-off spindle trigger and sear along with the distinctive receiver marking "U.S./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/MODEL 1903/MARK I". The rifle has been arsenal overhauled and re-finished and has a black green, parkerized finish and oil finished walnut stock. The barrel is roll stamped "SA/Ordnance 'Shell & Flame'/8-20/A" behind the front sight. The left stock wrist is stamped with two arsenal overhaul marks "RA-P" and "AAD" in a rectangle. A circled block "P" proofmark and a block "P" in a rectangle are stamped on the underside of the stock behind the trigger guard. The rifle has a WWI high hump handguard, two bolt "S" stock with grasping grooves and smooth buttplate, WWI rear sight with 2750 yard center notch and straight handle bolt with "C8" steel lot code on the safety lug. The special Mark I cut-off, spindle, sear and trigger are all on the rifle. Following the destruction of the Pedersen Devices in 1931, most Model 1903 Mark I rifles had the special components removed, overhauled and re-issued. The Pedersen Device comes with two original adjustment wrenches. Included with the rifle is an arsenal refinished Springfield Model 1905 bayonet dated 1909 and an unmodified leather scabbard marked "R.I.A./1908/T.C.".
