Description:

E.G. Lamson & Co., of Windsor, Vermont, c. 1865. Lamson & Co., manufactured 1,002 of the Ball Carbines under a 1864 dated contract with the Ordnance Department. These carbines were delivered to the Ordnance Department in May 1865 at the end of the Civil War. The carbine has a seven shot magazine, sling bar and ring on the left side of the receiver cleaning rod/ramrod on the right side of the forearm and two leaf folding rear sight graduated to 600 yards. The barrel has a military blue finish. The barrel bands, receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate are casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil finished black walnut. The left side of the receiver is roll stamped "E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR. VT./U.S./BALLS PATENT./JUNE, 23, 1863./MARCH, 15, 1864." An Ordnance final inspection mark that consists of three script initials with a rectangular border is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist immediately behind the receiver. A small block "G.G.S." sun-inspector's marks is stamped on the top of the stock comb and underside of the forearm. Small "S" Ordnance sub inspector's marks are stamped on most components.

Rating Definition:

Near new. The carbine is in as issued, unfired condition and shows virtually no storage or handling wear. The barrel has 99% of the military blue finish. The cleaning rod/ramrod is bright and has all of the reverse polishing marks at the tip. The barrel bands, receiver, breechblock, hammer, trigger guard and buttplate retain 99% of the vivid case colors. The screws have nearly all of the niter blue finish intact. The factory markings on the left side of the receiver are crisp. The stock and forearm are perfect with unhandled raised grain sharp edges and perfect Ordnance final inspection and sub-inspection marks. The stock and forearm are free from handling and storage marks. This is a nearly new example of a scarce low production Ball Repeating Carbine. This is a mint condition Ball Carbine that cannot be improved upon.
