Description:

Colt Fourth Model 1851 Navy revolver manufactured in 1859. The revolver has the distinctive Fourth Model large rounded trigger guard, large capping cut-out with no channel in the right recoil shield and beveled loading cut-out. A small dot is stamped above the serial number on the barrel lug and below the serial number on the frame, trigger guard and back strap indicating that the components were designated by Colt for engraving and special finish. The revolver was factory engraved by Gustave Young with his distinctive Germanic scrollwork on a punch dot background. Young's signature animal head is entwined among the scrollwork on the left side of the barrel lug. The sides of the hammer are decorated with Young's typical wolf head motif. The one-piece grip is deluxe highly figured walnut. The barrel has a dovetail mounted nickel silver front sight and is roll-stamped with the legend "-ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT.-" in an engraved panel with scalloped borders. "COLTS/PATENT/U.S." is hand engraved on the left side of the frame in an engraved panel. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Texas Navy battle scene and "COLTS PATENT No.". The full serial number, "92287" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, frame, trigger guard, back strap and on the cylinder. The loading lever is stamped with the partial serial number "2287". All of the visible serial numbers match.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The revolver has deep engraving, clear markings and serial numbers. The revolver has a silver-gray patina with a trace of bright blue under the loading lever. The cylinder has much of the naval scene intact. There is scattered light pitting on the barrel, loading lever, frame and cylinder. The forward portion of the hammer has been narrowed and most of the engraved wolf's head has been obliterated. The brass trigger guard and back strap have an untouched patina. Traces of silver plating are visible in protected areas. The grip is good overall with scattered light handling marks. Some of the original piano finish varnish remains on the left side of the grip. This is an original example of a scarce Colt Model 1851 Navy revolver with factory engraving by either Gustave Young or his shop.
