Manufactured in 1859. The top barrel flat is marked with the two line New York City address inside brackets. The left side of the frame is stamped "COLTS/PATENT." The cylinder has the stagecoach hold up scene. The upper front left side of the trigger guard is marked "V". The back strap is inscribed "Pres To Lt. F.W. Sowby N.J. Vet. Vols./May 25 1865 By His Friends". Matching serial numbers are found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, back strap and cylinder with the wedge having the matching partial serial number "55090" and "5090" on the loading lever and cylinder pin. Fitted with a smooth varnished one piece walnut grip. Comes with a period wooden case/lap desk with a brass plaque on the lid inscribed "LT. F.W. Sowby" and decorative scroll and shield and star motif brass corner adornment. There is a compartment in the lid with a fold down door which can be used to write on. The body of the case has a large compartment divided into 2 compartments and covered by a hinged lid. In the front of the case are three compartments that can be used for writing utensils and accessories. The lids are partially covered with blue felt. An internet check for Lt. Sowby met with negative results.

Very good as partially refinished (grip straps). The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown patina with strong scattered traces of original blue finish on the barrel and strong traces of muted original case colors in protected areas. The trigger guard and back strap retain 80% period replated silver with an aged patina on the exposed brass. The grips are fine with most of the original varnish remaining, and showing some minor dents and scratches. The cylinder scene is 95% visible and the markings are clear. The action is fine. The case is very good with some minor scratches and scuffs on the exterior. Some research may prove interesting.
