Documented Special Order Colt Single Action Army Revolver with Factory Carved Steer Head Ivory Grips

According to the included factory letter, this revolver was shipped as a single item to the Brandson Griswold Hardware Company, care of the Wyeth Hardware and Manufacturing Company of St Joseph, Missouri on January 23, 1928, in 32/20 caliber with a 4 3/4 inch barrel, blue finish, and "Ivory with carved steer head motif" grips. Blade and notch sights with the 2-line Hartford address on top of the barrel, "32 W.C.F." on the left, and the 2-line patent dates and Rampant Colt on the frame. Matching serial numbers are present on the frame and grip straps with the assembly number "1184" on the loading gate and frame. Grips are two-piece ivory with nickel-finished Rampant Colt medallions, the left panel smooth and the right panel decorated with a raised carved steer head, 2 3/4 inches long, in the traditional Colt style. Research shows a Branson & Griswold Hardware Company ("Brandson" possibly a typographical error) operating out of Trinidad, Colorado, and Wyeth Hardware got it's start in Missouri as an outfitter for settlers heading West, remaining in operation clear into the 1980s.

ConditionVery fine with 70% plus original blue finish, showing the start of a brown patina with bright gray on the edges and high points and scattered handling marks. 60% case colors are present in the lower areas and on the left side of the frame with a smooth gray and brown patina overall. Grips are also very fine with a few handling marks and age stress lines present on butt, along with attractive grain and color. Mechanically excellent.
