Exceptional Factory Documented Deluxe Factory Engraved Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Shotgun with Factory Order Extra Barrel Set and Hang Tags and Factory Letter

Colt Model 1883 Double Barrel Shotgun with double triggers, factory engraving, checkered, fancy gain walnut stock and forearm and extra barrel set with forearm. This shotgun is accompanied by a Colt factory letter that describes the features as: 12 gauge, thirty-inch barrel, "7 6/16 lbs. with regular barrels/7 1/4 lbs. with extra barrels" with blue finish and "Grade 1/1/2". The letter states that this shotgun was shipped from Colt's to the Sticker Hardware Co. on September 29, 1898. The two hang tags are serial numbered to the shotgun and show the 40-yard patterns for each barrel set. The Damascus finish barrels are blue and feature raised matted ribs with brass beads. The factory legend "COLT'S. PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD. CT. U.S.A." is die-stamped in a single line on the top of each rib. The receiver and forearm latches are color casehardened and the trigger guard and break lever are blue. The side plates and bottom of the receiver, trigger guard and upper and lower tang are engraved with delicate English style scrollwork and double line zig-zag or scalloped borders. The bottom of the receiver is engraved "PATENTED" in an arch above" AUG. 22. SEP. 19, 1882". "SAFE" is die-stamped above the safety selector switch. The serial number "7780" is engraved on the lower tang and stamped on the bottom of the right barrel, on the inside of the forearm latch and on the inside of the forearm. The extra barrel set is numbered "7780" in the same locations. All of the visible serial numbers match. The stock and both forearms are highly figured fancy grain piano finished walnut with fine checkered panels. Both forearms have black horn tips. The pistol grip has a black hard rubber cap. The stock is fitted with a black checkered hard rubber buttplate with the Rampant Colt trademark embossed in the center. The stock is inlaid with a German silver oval escutcheon. The Model 1883 Double Barrel Shotgun is considered to be one of the finest firearms ever manufactured by Colt. No expense was spared to ensure that the Model 1883 Shotgun was equal to the finest British and European products. The Model 1883 Shotgun is generally considered to be one of the best of all American double barrel shotguns. Only 7,366 of these fine shotguns were manufactured between 1883 and 1895. All Colt Model 1883 Shotguns are scarce and desirable; examples with factory spare barrel set numbered to the gun are very rare. Serial numbered hang tags like the pair included with this shotgun are almost non-existent.

ConditionExcellent. Both barrel sets retain nearly all of the very delicate blue Damascus finish. The only significant wear is some very minor age spotting on the spare barrel. The receiver retains at least 90% of the subtle case colors. The finely engraved English scrollwork is very crisp. The highly figured fancy grain walnut stock is excellent and retains nearly all of the high polish piano finish with sharp checkering. Wear is limited to a few very minor handling and storage marks. Both forearms are in the same excellent condition with sharp checkering and minimal handling wear. The two hang tags are framed and in excellent condition. This is a tremendous example of a deluxe factory engraved Colt Model 1883 Hammerless Shotgun with a very rare documented and serial numbered spare barrel set. It would be hard to improve on the condition and rarity of this exceptional shotgun.
