Cased Pair of G. Noack Berlin Dueling Percussion Pistols Presented to First Lieutenant Edwin von Knobloch of the 2nd Garde Ulanen Regiment

A) G. Noack Dueling Percussion Pistol

This cased pair of German dueling percussion pistols was presented to First Lieutenant Edwin von Knobloch by the officers of the 2nd Garde Ulanen Regiment. The deeply twist etched and rifled octagon barrel is inlaid in silver "G. NOAK IN BERLIN" with inlaid silver bands at the breech. A "crown/v" proof is stamped on the left barrel flat at the rear. The scroll engraved patent breech has a snail filed fence. The upper tang has an adjustable V-notch rear sight. The scroll engraved lock plate is fitted with a pivoting safety and serpentine hammer with stylized dolphin head. Scrollwork extends to the spur trigger guard with a spear finial. Equipped with a single set trigger. The lock is held to the stock with two screws through scroll engraved side plates. The European walnut half stock features a flared butt, Schanbeled tip, single barrel wedge and attractive fleur-de-lis checkered pattern on the grip area. The domed floral engraved grip cap is marked with the number "8323". Both pistols are housed in an oak case which has a large inlaid scrolled banner with the names of various officers of the 2nd Garde Ulanen Regiment (including Count and later Field Marshall Alfred von Schlieffen) who presented this set as a farewell gift to 1st Lt. Edwin von Knobloch. This set of pistols was likely given to 1st Lt. von Knobloch when he transferred to the 1st Hussar regiment in 1859. The dates "16 December 1854" and "22 February 1859" are engraved on the left part of the banner and coincide with his time of service with the Ulanen Regiment. (Biographical data on 1st Lt. von Knobloch has been provided by the consignor.) Above the banner is an inlaid coat of arms depicting a hunting horn surmounted by five pennants over a knights helm and shield with three wine urns. The case is lined in blue velvet and is French fitted for the pistols and accessories which include a bullet mold for conical bullet, ebony handled nipple wrench with pricker, double face powder flask, walnut handle screwdriver, brass cap box, James Dixon & Sons oiler, sight adjustment key, steel loading/cleaning rod with jags, brass powder measure and two spare percussion nipples. The case also has two covered compartments containing an unopened Ely cap tin, cast bullets and key.

ConditionFine as partially refinished (wood). The pistol has an attractive bright appearance with most of the etched twist pattern remaining with a patch of light pitting at the muzzle and some minor flash pitting. The revarnished stock is very good with a repaired crack on the forearm and some minor handling marks with overall crisp checkering. Mechanically fine. The case is very good with minor handling/storage marks and the lining showing some high spot wear.
