This is a fabulous examples of a rare DWM Model 1902 Luger Carbine that was engraved with the original owner's gold inlaid initials on the attaching iron. Reportedly, this specific Luger Carbine was ordered directly from Hans Tauscher in 1903, which included having the initials and date: "R.S.M./1903" engraved on top of the attaching iron by the DWM factory. The reason we know this was done by the factory was that the attaching iron was factory numbered (36) on the underside, (in lieu of on top) which could only have only been done by the DWM factory. The initials reportedly stand for "Rolley S. Murray". This beautiful rig also includes a custom made (during the 1903 era) beautiful presentation case made from exceptional "birdseye" maple with a contrasting lighter shade of maple around the edges of the case. The exceptional Luger Carbine shows almost no wear that is complete with the various accessories. These carbines were an early attempt by DWM to a produce a lightweight rifle substitute to compete specifically with the Mauser Broomhandle carbines. There were only a total of 2,500 of this model produced in two serial number blocks, with this example produced in the second block, of which only 1,400 total were made. These carbines exhibit a unique 11 3/4 inch barrel and the small walnut forend which houses a small spring accelerator. This forend is fitted to a small hanger on the front end of the frame, as installed by the DWM factory. The purpose of this accelerator is to help the carbine function during the cycling phase. These early 1902 Luger Carbines also exhibit all the desirable early features such as: the long old style frame, flat mainspring, grip safety, dished toggles with toggle lock on the right side, and the recessed/flat breech bolt. The top of the chamber is blank, and the front toggle is marked with the DWM logo. The full serial number (24436) is marked on the underside of the frame hanger/extension and the underside of the barrel. Additionally, the underside of the barrel is stamped with the early "Crown over B, U and G" proofmarks over "122,23". The left side of the barrel extension/upper receiver is correctly marked with the "Crown over B and U" proofs. The cutout inside the forend for the frame extension is correctly numbered (436) which matches the pistol. The last two digits of the serial number (36) are correctly marked on the various small parts including the underside of the stock attaching iron as noted above and the recoil lug on the underside of the barrel extension. The walnut stock is complete with a black horn buttplate and lower sling swivel. The magazine has a nickel plated body, and the correct wood base is marked with only a single small ordnance bomb type proof. These pistols all have a rust blued finish with a straw color on the various small parts. As noted above, this Luger Carbine is housed in a period made custom case that houses the Luger Carbine, shoulder stock, spare magazine, brass cleaning rod, pin-punch and one box (50 rounds) of original DWM 7,65mm ammunition. The case has a red velvet lining that has been fitted with all nickel plated locks and hinges.

Excellent with 98% of the original blue finish overall, edge and high spot wear, and 98% of the period refurbished straw colors on the small parts. The wood components, stock, forend and grips are all in excellent condition with nice matching walnut color overall with sharp distinct checkering on all three components. The stock shows only minor handling marks on the sides. The display case is in very fine condition with some very minor crazing of the varnish on the outside of the wood, minor scratches and handling marks in a few places, and some minor separation of the lighter colored maple border. The "birdseye" pattern is very close and dense showing 90% of the birdseye dots in the wood overall. A very unique and distinctive special order, original Model 1902 DWM Luger Carbine.
