Description:

Manufactured in 1890. This is an example of a Winchester-Hotchkiss Third Model bolt action carbine. The Winchester-Hotchkiss carbine features a turn bolt action design with an internal tubular magazine and was the first bolt action long gun manufactured by Winchester. The Third Models can be easily identified by the two piece stock and exposed flat sided receiver. This carbine has the 22 1/2 inch barrel usually found on the Second Model as apposed to the 20 inch found on the Third Model. The lower tang has the three line Winchester patent marking "PAT. OCT. 16. 1860 JUNE 25. 1872. JULY 23. 1876./<AND UNDER B.B. HOTCHKISS' PAT'S AUG.17.1869>/FEB.15.1870.NOV.9. 1875.NOV.14. 1876. JAN.23.1877". The upper receiver tang is marked "MODEL OF 1883 " and the serial number is marked ahead of the trigger guard. The top of the barrel is marked "---MANUFACTURED BY THE---/---WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.---" ahead of the rear barrel band. The barrel is absent of a caliber marking. Blade front sight and folding ladder rear sight graduated 1,000 yards with range markings 1 through 4 and "C" on the left side of the ski slope base. Safety lever on the upper right rear of the receiver, saddle ring and bar on the left side and mounted with a smooth full length walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an iron carbine style buttplate. The carbine is accompanied by a Cody firearm Museum Records Office archive form that confirms the serial number and carbine configuration with the carbine shipped on May 29, 1886.

Rating Definition:

Good as refinished. The receiver and buttplate have a gray "orange peel" texture with some minor pitting. The barrel, bolt and rear of trigger guard have a gray brown patina. The wood has been refinished with a hairline crack present rear of top tang, some minor dents and scratches on the balance. The serial number is faint, but legible and the remaining markings are clear. The action is fine.
