This is an excellent example of a Winchester 1883 Third Model bolt action musket with a late turned down bolt. The Winchester-Hotchkiss rifle and muskets, feature a turn bolt action design with an internal tubular magazine. The Third Models can be easily identified by the two-piece stock and exposed, flat sided receiver. The lower rear tang has the three line Winchester, patent marking "PAT. OCT. 16. 1860 JUNE 25. 1872. JULY 23. 1876./<AND UNDER B.B. HOTCHKISS' PAT'S AUG.17.1869>/FEB.15.1870.NOV.9. 1875.NOV.14. 1876. JAN.23.1877." The upper receiver tang is marked "MODEL OF 1883 " and the trigger guard has the serial number. The top of the barrel is marked "---MANUFACTURED BY THE---/---WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A.---" ahead of the rear barrel band and "45-70" is marked on top at the breech. The rear sight is graduated 1,000 yards with range markings 1 through 4 on the left side of the ski slope base. The receiver, buttplate and trigger guard are casehardened and the remainder is blue. Mounted with a smooth full length walnut forearm and straight grip stock with "224" stamped on the buttplate tang and complete with an original leather sling. It is fitted with a notched rectangular bayonet catch on the tip of forearm. The included Winchester letter confirms musket configuration and that it was received in the warehouse on March 6, 1895 and shipped on January 5, 1915, order number 595814.

Excellent with 98% of the original blue and color case hardened finish overall. The stock and forend are both in near excellent condition with their nice original stock finish with minor handling marks and scratches on the sides. A really high end condition Hotchkiss musket.
