Historic U.S. Military Saginaw M1 Semi-Automatic Carbine Reported to Have Been Used at the Invasion of Normandy

This example was manufactured between May 1943 and May 1944. The front sight is unmarked with the unique dish behind the sight blade, the barrel is marked "SAGINAW S G DIV./GENERAL MOTORS", type 1 barrel band, 2 rivet shallow groove handguard stamped "TN", flat faced slide stamped "SG" on the bottom, flat bolt stamped "SG", type 1 rear sight stamped "S", magazine catch stamped "SG", push button safety, "SG" marked trigger housing, "SG" marked recoil plate and a high wood walnut stock stamped "5 71" in the sling cutout, boxed "SG" cartouche on the right side and an ordnance cartouche on the right side. The stock also has an intertwined "HC" carved on the left side in front of the wrist and "E.T." engraved on the right side behind the wrist and above the cartouches. Consignor's notes indicate that his father Edward Thomas took the 397th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Automatic Weapons Battalion ashore in a Higgins Boat. With a Notice of Separation From U.S. Naval Service form for Edward Bernard Thomas stating the vessels and stations he served as "NRS NEW YORK *NTS SAMPSON *RS NYK NOB LONDONDERRY NO IRELAND *COTU 1273 NOIC OMEHA (CTG 127.3 USNAB 11 PSC LIDO BEACH, L.I., NEW YORK.", that he receiver the European Theatre ribbon with 1 star, American Theatre ribbon, Victory Medal and Letter of Commendation. Also included are papers relating to the 397th AAA AW battalion.

ConditionFine with more than half of the faded original dark green parkerized finish remains with some scattered minor scratches, blending with brown patina, minor cycling wear and the buttplate retains traces of parkerized finish with a mostly brown patina. The wood is very good with a hairline crack (which follows the grain) present on right side, scattered dings, scratches and carved initials overall with distinct cartouches. Mechanically excellent.
