This is an excellent example of an engraved 400 Express Purdey & Sons double barrel rifle. The locks, frame, trigger guard, break lever and forearm hardware are engraved with fine English scroll. Each lock, with an assisted opening feature, is marked "J. PURDEY & SONS" and the underside is marked "J. PURDEY & SONS/LONDON". The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of each barrel under the forearm, and the flats are marked "CORDITE", "47-230 MAX", "400EX", nitro proofed with black powder, "crown/V" and "crown/GP" proofmarks. The water table is marked with two "crown/V" proofmarks. The matching serial number is also marked on the inside of the forearm hardware. Ramped blade front sight and two leaf (one folding, one fixed) rear sight on the solid rib marked "J. PURDEY & SONS . AUDLEY HOUSE. SOUTH AUDLEY STREET. LONDON/MADE OF SIR JOSEPH WHITWORTH'S FLUID PRESSED STEEL." Seven pin side locks, cocking indicators, double triggers, double tang mounted safety with gold "BOLTED" and "SAFE", hidden third bite, folding tang mounted peep sight and mounted with a nicely figured, deluxe multi-point checkered walnut splinter forearm and pistol grip stock with teardrop flats, engraved metal grip cap, cheekpiece, solid recoil pad, gold initial oval inscribed "C.W.T" and a sling swivel. There is also a sling swivel mounted on the underside of the barrels. The rifle comes in a oak and leather case with brass corner protectors, "C.W.T." embossed in black on the lid, a brass disk on the lid, leather carrying handle and red felt lining with a black and gold makers lid affixed to the inside of the lid which reads "JAMES PURDEY & SONS/GUN & RIFLE MAKERS,/AUDLEY HOUSE/SOUTH AUDLEY STREET,/LONDON". In the case is a two piece brass and wooden cleaning rod with a short handle piece, two nickel snap caps, a nickel oiler marked "G&J. W. HAWKSLEY" on the lid, three chamber brushes in a leather pouch, a pull through bore brush, three bore brushes in a leather pouch, an ivory container containing four extra front sights, ivory container with two extra firing pins and springs and a box containing four 400 express brass casings and one reloaded cartridge. The case comes with a canvas and leather outer cover with pouch, five straps and "C.W. Tosh" on the top. Length of pull is 14 9/16 inches, drop at the comb is 2 inches, drop at the heel is 3 inches, and cast on is 3/16 inch.
