Civil War Sharps New Model 1863 Percussion Carbine

This is a late production New Model 1863 Carbine made without a patch box. Manufactured from 1863 to 1865, this carbine is fitted with a sling bar and ring, and Lawrence patent folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked with the three-line address and "NEW MODEL 1863" behind the rear sight. The left rear flat is marked with a "E.A.W." inspectors mark "W". The left side of the frame is marked with the two line Sharps patent marking and the lock is marked with the two-line Sharps and Lawrence patent date markings. The sling bar base is marked with "AWM" and there is the single letter "M" on some of the parts. The rear sight base is marked with the Lawrence patent marking. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with two cartouches on the left wrist, ""P.B" on the underside, rear of the forearm and a small "AWM" on the comb directly ahead of the buttplate tang.

ConditionVery good plus. The barrel has 25% blue with the balance a mottled brown patina with some scattered minor oxidation. The remaining metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with some strong traces of original case colors in the protected area around the hammer with the balance showing casehardened pattern. The wood is fine with a small chip on the front of the comb, and some scattered minor dings, dents and scratches. The markings are clear. One wrist cartouche is faint, the other is legible. The action is fine.
