Documented Civil War U.S. Springfield Model 1863 Percussion Rifle-Musket Gettysburg Battlefield Pickup with Letter From The Gettysburg Museum of History

This is an example of a documented Gettysburg battlefield pickup Springfield Model 1863 Rifle-Musket. It is accompanied by a letter from The Gettysburg Museum Of History dated 7/5/2013 and was once on display at the museum. The rifle-Musket was deaccessioned from the museum, deaccession number 01.db29.13. It is Described as "Original Gettysburg Relic Springfield Model 63 Rifle With Old White 19th Century Paint "Souvenir Of Gettysburg". In part the letter states that the Civil War Springfield Model 1863 rifle is in relic condition with pitting consistent with an early pickup rifle, that all parts match the original gun, describes the paint marking which is the same type as early battlefield museums such as Danner Museum and GAR posts. The letter also states "we have examined the rifle and the paint and we guarantee this item without limitations for authenticity." The letter is signed by the museum's Curator. "US/SPRINGFIELD" is visible on the lock ahead of the hammer and the upper barrel flat and the breech is marked with the "V/P/eagle head" proof marks. No date is visible on the lock or barrel tang. The rifle has a blade front sight and blank rear sight dovetail, sling swivel on the middle barrel band and front of the trigger guard, tulip head iron ramrod and mounted with a full length straight grip walnut stock with neatly painted "SOUVENIR/OF/GETTYSBURG" on the right side of the buttstock. A faint "US" is visible on the buttplate tang. Also comes with a five page story titled "Action at the Witmer Farm Near Gettysburg, PA Friday June 26th, 1863" by Scott L. Mingus, Sr.

ConditionRelic condition with a dark patina on the metal surfaces, showing heavy pitting in most areas. The hammer is frozen at the first click and the ramrod is frozen in the stock slot. The stock shows heavy gouging on the right side around the rear barrel band and moderate gouging around the middle barrel band. There are three gouges on the left side of the grip area, a small minor crack behind the lock and overall dents, chips and scuffs. The stock remains solid. A historic documented Gettysburg battlefield Model 1863 pickup.
