The Spencer was one of the most widely used and popular Civil War firearms. This particular rifle is the "Army Model" with the front sight base doubling as a bayonet lug for a socket bayonet. Fixed blade front sight and folding notch/aperture rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The top of the receiver is marked "SPENCER REPEATING/RIFLE CO. BOSTON, MASS./PAT'D MARCH 6, 1860" and the serial number is marked on the top of the receiver next to the hammer. Mounted with a full length smooth walnut forearm with three barrel bands and straight stock with steel buttplate and leather sling. Consignor notes state rifle was once owned by John D. Kennedy of the Massachusetts 4th Volunteers (1862-1865).

Rating Definition:

Very good. The rifle has an untouched smooth crisp dark patina. The wood is also very good with a faint cartouche, a number of minor handling marks. Mechanically fine.
