This lot consists of two James MacNaughton hammerless shotguns. This shotgun was once part of a two gun set and according to consignor notes the "#2" gun was destroyed in a fire at Colchester, England. The action, trigger guard and break lever are engraved with fine English scroll. The top of the fences are marked "MACNAUGHTON EDINBURGH" in a banner. Damascus barrels with a single bead sight on the smooth concave solid rib which is marked "JAMES MACNAUGHTON 26 HANOVER STREET, EDINBURGH AND PERTH". The top of the rib near the breech and the break lever have a gold inlaid "1". The bottom of the barrels under the forearm are marked "DAMASCUS/MACNAUGHTON", a British proof mark and the matching serial number. The bore measures .729 on the right and .735 on the left. The flats are marked with "crown/V" and "crown/GP" proofs, "NITRO PROOF", gauge, "No 1" and "1 1/8 OZ MAXIMUM". Each side of the water table is marked "MACNAUGHTON", "crown/V", No. 1" and "No 2443". The barrels are brown, trigger guard and break lever are blue, casehardened action and bright triggers. Double triggers, tang mounted automatic safety with gold "SAFE" and mounted with a multi-point checkered splinter walnut forearm with engraved hardware and marked "No 1" in the inside, and a straight grip stock with a checkered bare butt and gold initial oval inscribed "C.B.S.". 2 1/2 inch chambers, choked full/improved cylinder, ejectors and 14 1/4 inch length of pull. The drop at the comb is 1 1/2 inches, drop at heel is 2 1/8 inches, cast off is 1/8 inch and 1/2 inch toe out. Bores measure .729 (right) and .736 (left), the wall thickness is .026 (right) and .025 (left), the bore constriction is .008 (right) (IC) and .040 (left) (Full). The shotguns come in a walnut case with brass corner reinforcements and red felt lined two level interior. The stocks are stored in the bottom and the barrels and accessories in a lift-out upper portion. There is a James MacNaughton makers label affixed to the inside of the lid. In the case is a three piece wooden cleaning rod, three wooden handled screwdrivers, two snap caps, bore mop, two bore brushes and a jag.

Professionally refurbished to very fine condition. The case is very good with a few minor scratches on the exterior and some staining on the lining. The accessories are excellent.

The water table is marked on each side with a "crown/V", "MACNAUGHTON/No 2008" on the left side and "No 315/PATENT" on the right. 2 1/2 inch chambers, choked full/improved cylinder with ejectors and 14 3/4 inch length of pull. Bores measure .730 (right) and .729 (left), the wall thickness is .030 (right) and .030 (left), the bore constriction is .030 (right) (Full) and .008 (left) (Ic). Double triggers, tang mounted automatic safety and mounted with a nicely figured multi-point checkered splinter forearm and straight grip stock with checkered bare butt and gold initial oval. The drop at the comb is 1 1/2 inches, 2 1/4 inches at the heel, and the cast off is 1/4 inch.

Very fine as refinished overall. The barrels retain 98% brown finish, 98% blue finish remains on the break lever, triggers and trigger guard. The action has been cleaned and has a bright appearance. There is a small chip on the upper left edge of the forearm and a small dent on the left side of the stock. Unless noted above the markings and engraving are clear. Mechanically fine.
