Description:

This early example was manufactured circa 1842 and has flourishes of floral scroll engraving on the receiver, side plates, hammers, break lever, trigger guard and top tang of the buttplate. There is a dog on point engraved on the trigger guard and there are two game birds engraved on the top tang of the buttplate along with a "1" indicating this was originally part of a game bird set. The lock plates are engraved "THOMAS BOSS" and the top of the rib is engraved "THOMAS BOSS. 73 ST. JAMES'S STREET LONDON.". The barrels have a single brass bead sight, are choked cylinder/cylinder and have 2 3/4 inch chambers. Mounted on a multi-point checkered splinter walnut forearm and straight grip stock with blank initial oval and smooth steel buttplate. Length of pull is 14 5/8 inches. With a magazine article covering the history of Boss & Co., a leather covered takedown hardcase with a Boss & Co. label inside, a 2 piece cleaning rod, a tool and a pull through bore brush.

Rating Definition:

Fine. Professionally converted and refurbished, 95% plus of the brown finish remains on the barrels with nearly all of the Damascus pattern visible. There are some scattered scratches and dings on the barrels. The casehardened components have a silvery gray patina. The hammers, break lever and trigger guard retain 50% of the blue finish with light oxidation and some pitting. The wood is very good as refinished with scattered scratches and dings. Mechanically fine. The case is good.
