Manufactured in 1897 in desirable 45-70 caliber. The top of the barrel ahead of the rear sight is marked "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN, U.S.A.", "45-70" is marked on top at the breech. "-MODEL 1886-" on the upper tang and the serial number on the lower tang behind the lever, and "PAT, OCT. 14, 1884/JAN. 20, 1885" directly behind the trigger. Dovetailed German silver blade front sight and folding leaf rear sporting sight graduated to 1,000 yards. Full magazine tube and smooth forearm with an iron end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
Very good plus. The barrel and magazine tube have a smooth brown patina with a small amount of light spotting on the breech end of the barrel. The receiver retains 30% original case colors with a smooth mottled gray patina on the balance. The hammer shows much of the original case colors with a smooth dark patina on the balance. The lever has a smooth dark patina with strong bright original case colors in protected areas. The forend cap and buttplate have a smooth mottled gray patina. The wood is fine with much of the original varnish remaining and showing a few minor dents and handling marks. The markings are clear. The action is fine.
