Description:

Henry Lever Action rifle manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. c. June 1864. The rifle has the distinctive brass gunmetal receiver and crescent buttplate with blued octagon barrel and integral 15-shot magazine. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The straight grain, walnut stock is oil finished. The barrel has a nickel silver front sight and dovetail mounted folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight has a 900 yard center notch and elevator bar with rounded ends. The magazine has the late production large brass follower. The rifle has the second pattern buttplate with sharply pointed heel. The butt trap contains the correct four-piece, jointed steel cleaning rod furnished with later production Henry rifles. A sling swivel and screw fastened sling loop are mounted on the left side of the stock and barrel. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped ahead of the rear sight dovetail with the second style legend "HENRY'S PATENT. OCT.16.1860/MANUFACT'D. BY THE NEWHAVEN ARMS CO. NEWHAVEN.CT." with all serif letters. The serial number "5632" is stamped on the top barrel flat, on the left side of the lower receiver tang, in the upper tang inlet or the stock and on the inside of the buttplate at the heel. All of the visible serial numbers match. The late style cap head buttplate and tang screws are correctly not serial numbered. The Henry rifle was the most advanced firearm manufactured during the Civil War. Most of the New Haven Arms Co. rifle production was purchased by individual Federal soldiers who wanted the advantage of a 15-shot repeating rifle. After the Civil War the Henry rifle was extremely popular with frontiersmen and Native Americans.

Rating Definition:

Good as partially restored. The rifle has a reproduction rear sight, non-factory sling swivel, re-rolled barrel legend and refinished stock. The barrel has a gray-brown patina with smooth surfaces and sharp edges. The receiver and buttplate have an attractive, age patina with tight side plate joints. Wear is limited to a few minor scratches. The hammer and lever have a smooth mottled brown patina. The stock has been refinished. This is still a good representative example a Civil War production Henry rifle.
