Description:

Measuring 32 1/2 inches overall, this walking stick is constructed from a single piece of hardwood with an iron-shod tip on the tapered 28 inch shaft, which is decorated at the top with scroll pattern gilt brass inlays, carved and paint filled on one side with "Gen MeAde(sic)" and "1861" below an inlaid portrait of a man in a United States Volunteer uniform, the other side "Made By U F Clay(sic)" and "1910" below a space for another inlay. The stick is topped with a loop, 5 1/4 inch external diameter and 3 3/4 inch internal diameter. George Meade was promoted to Brigadier General (Volunteers) in August of 1861, and helped establish the defenses of Washington, D.C.. U.F. Clay has not been identified, nor has his connection to General Meade been established.

Rating Definition:

Very fine overall, with some light scuffs and handling marks. A few inlays are absent, and the portrait inlay is absent from the "1910" side.
