This is an exceptional example of a deluxe, special order Winchester Model 1886 take-down rifle as manufactured in late 1900's. This rifle has several very rare special order features such as: (1) take down barrel/receiver (2) half-length magazine (3) pistol grip stock (4) shotgun style buttstock with shotgun style buttplate (5) checkered stock and forend (6) rubber butt plate. The unusual aspects of this rifle is that with all these special order features the walnut stock and forend are both plain, non-figured walnut and the checkered panels on the stock and forend are both very small. The rifle has a blue finish on the barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, loading gate and trigger. The hammer and lever are color casehardened. The stock has a black, hard rubber, pistol grip cap embossed with "WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS" in relief and a black, hard rubber, checkered, shotgun buttplate with the circular Winchester logo in the center. The round barrel has a Lyman "sheard bead" front sight with ivory bead and a Winchester, adjustable sporting rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped in two lines "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" with the left rear side marked "NICKEL STEEL" only with no other markings, with "45-70" stamped in front of the receiver. Again this is an unusual caliber since it was manufactured at just about the time the 33 WCF was coming out and it has the nickel steel barrel which was really intended for smokeless powder cartridges. The 1884 and 1885 patent dates are roll-stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger and the serial number "122747" is stamped on the lower tang behind the tang screws.
Very fine with 80% plus of the original blue finish with light blue loss on the underside of the receiver and take down mechanism with the cocking lever also having faded to a silvery patina with subdued case colors on the upper part of the lever. The stock and forend are both in very fine condition with 90% of the original factory varnish with some areas of light flaking and minor handling marks. The checkering is also in very fine condition with nice original checkering showing light wear across the tops of the checkering. Overall a very nice, special order Winchester Model 1886 lever action rifle.
