Whitney-Kennedy lever action repeating rifle manufactured by the Whitney Arms Company circa 1885. The rifle has the late pattern, full loop, lever adopted in 1883 with full octagon barrel and full-length magazine. The forearm and stock are straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The stock has a crescent buttplate with sliding brass trap door. The butt trap contains a four-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The barrel has a nickel-silver, "Rocky Mountain" style front sight and buckhorn, sporting style rear sight. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver, lever and buttplate have a high polish blue finish. The loading gate is a fiery niter blue and the hammer is casehardened with knurled spur. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "WHITNEY KENNEDY MF'D. BY/WHITNEY ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CT. U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "44 CAL" is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "PAT'D JANY. 7-73/AP.(1) MAY 13 & AUG. 12-79" in two-lines. The serial number "R15" is stamped on the lower receiver tang. The Whitney-Kennedy rifle was essentially an improved Whitney-Burgess-Morse lever action rifle. Total production was approximately 15,000 rifles between 1879 and 1886.
