Exceptional Civil War Starr Breechloading Percussion Carbine

Civil War breechloading percussion carbine manufactured by Starr Arms Co. of Yonkers, New York, c. 1865. The carbine has a military blue barrel with color casehardened receiver, side-plate, hammer, breechblock and lever. The barrel band and buttplate are brass. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The carbine has a folding, two-leaf rear sight on the barrel and a staple-mounted sling ring on the left side of the receiver. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped "STARR ARMS Co YONKERS N.Y." between the barrel band and the rear sight. "STARR'S PATENT/SEPT. 14th 1858" is stamped across the upper receiver tang and "STARR ARMS Co./YONKERS N.Y." is stamped on the lockplate behind the hammer. The serial number, "20016" is stamped on the right side of the breechblock. The Ordnance sub-inspection mark "H.G.S." is stamped on the left side of the barrel at the breech and "F.D.L" is stamped on the stock comb near the buttplate. Single letter sub-inspection marks are stamped on most components. Two Ordnance inspection marks which consist of three script initials within an oval border are stamped on the left stock wrist. The Starr Arms Co. manufactured 20,601 breechloading percussion carbines between 1862 and 1865. Most Starr carbines were issued to Federal cavalry units in the western theater.

ConditionExcellent plus, as issued. The carbine retains at least 98% of the original blue and casehardened finish and appears to be un-fired. The barrel has nearly all of the original dull, military blue finish. The barrel markings are clear and the bore is mirror bright. The receiver, side plate, hammer and lever retain nearly all of the subdued case colors. Most of the original dried packing grease is present on the breechblock and interior parts. The is no flash-pitting on the percussion nipple, receiver, hammer or adjacent areas of the barrel. The brass barrel band and buttplate have a good-looking, untouched, patina. The stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition with raised, unhandled grain, wear is limited to several very minor storage bruises on the heel of the stock. This is an exceptional example of a near new Starr Breechloading carbine. It is the best Starr carbine ever offered for sale by the Rock Island Auction Co.
