Victorian Era Miniature Suit of 16th Century Style Armor with Stand

Produced in the Victorian era, this is a complete set of miniature armor with shield. These suits were popular display pieces in Victorian homes during an era of romanticization of the Medieval period. The armor is 29 inches tall and set on a 9 1/2 inch wide by 6 inch tall base with black rods to support the armor from the inside. This example has a full visor helmet with raised comb. The faulds and tassets cover the front of the hip/upper thigh area with the back side exposed. There are roped edges on most of the elements which also have grooves except for the back and calf pieces which are smooth. The elbow couters and knee poleyns are winged. The gauntlets are fixed to the vambraces which in turn are also fixed to the rerebraces, but the arms remain partially mobile. Similarly, the leg components are all fixed together but are also partially mobile with pointed sabatons.

ConditionFine. The armor has a silver-gray patina with some light oxidation overall. The interior has more noticeable oxidation than does the exterior. The back of the helmet at the base of the come has a visible weld possibly indicating a repair. The wood base has a creamy white coloration on the exterior and black on the underside with chips most notably on the lower corners and a long crack in the top under the black painted supporting rods which have some chips and wear on the edges.
