Description:

The consignor notes indicate that this original 68 inch long matchlock long gun was brought to the U.S. in 1930s from Afghanistan by an American ambassador. Indian matchlocks with the same shape and similar features in the Museum Victoria date to the mid-1850s. It features a fixed post front sight and notch rear sight, has four ornate silver barrel bands, long decorative silver sideplates, 2 star or flower shaped inlays on both sides of the wrist, long narrow stock with 2 inch high butt and silver buttplate, brass trigger and firing lever, 9 inch long silver trigger plate that resembles a sword, silver lever plate, and swivel brass pan cover. There is floral engraving on the top of the barrel at the breech and muzzle with three gold filled stripes on each end and gold fill on the engraving. The stock has some engraving just ahead of the sideplates. Includes a woven carrying cord and iron ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The long gun has a mottled silver patina with some oxidation, marks, scratches and traces of the gold fill remaining on the engraving. The golden stripes on the barrel remain well filled. The silver has aged well and is clean considering the weapon's age. The stock is very fine with some minor dings and marks, a minor crack on the left in front of the sideplate, and some chips missing from the upper edges along the barrel. The trigger and matchlock firing lever operate smoothly.
