This is one of only 10,001 Rolling Block Rifles manufactured between 1871 and 1872 by Springfield Armory under a royalty agreement with Remington Arms Company. The barrel, barrel bands, forend cap, trigger, hammer, buttplate, rolling block, pivot pins and pivot pin retainer are polished bright. The frame and trigger guard are casehardened. The right side of the frame is stamped with the eagle/shield motif above "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872" with the left side stamped "MODEL 1871." The upper tang has the two line Remington patent dates (1864 and 1868) marking and the two barrel bands are marked with the letter "U". It has a blue ladder rear sight graduated to 9 (900 yards) and a bright cleaning rod. It is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with an oval "ESA" inspector cartouche on the left side wrist and a square cartouche on the lower wrist behind the lower tang followed by a large "13". The buttplate is stamped "US" on the tang.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The rifle has an overall brown patina with some gray towards the front of the barrel. The buttplate has oxidation. The wood is also very good with various minor dings and scratches as well as a hairline crack extending back from the lower tang. Mechanically excellent with clear markings.
