Description:

This is an example of a Northwest flintlock trade musket manufactured by the famous British company Barnett. The lock plate is marked "BARNETT" over an illegible date behind the hammer with a "Fox/EB" proofmark struck ahead of the hammer. The lock and hammer have a simple double line border. The upper left barrel flat is stamped with a "crown/GP" proof, the number "24", a "crown/V" proof and the letters "TB" for Thomas Barnett, head of the Barnett organization before 1850. An additional "Fox/EB" proofmark is stamped on the top barrel flat. The part octagon barrel is equipped with a blade front sight and there are no provisions for a rear sight. The ornate brass side plate is shaped like a mythical serpent/dragon, known as the Hudson's Bay Fuke, this gun has a common ornament of 19th century trade muskets, and shows great detail. Three screws hold the side plate in place. The side plate, ramrod pipes and flat buttplate are brass. The full length stock is smooth and has two ramrod pipes. The buttplate is secured to the stock by seven tacks. Complete with a brass tipped wooden ramrod.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The musket has a smooth dark patina with areas of smooth gray. The top rear chamber area of barrel has file marks where tang was once removed to unload. There is some very scattered pitting with overall pitting on the trigger guard. The brass has a bright appearance. The sanded and reoiled stock is good with a number of minor pressure dents and a wood filled repair on the underside of the forearm. Mechanically fine.
