Description:

This unique prototype trapdoor rifle has Belgian proof marks on the left side of the barrel at the breech and on the breech block. It features a blade front sight on a raised stud and a folding rear sight graduated to 800 yards with an ornately shaped trigger guard, sling swivels on the rear barrel band and butt, and a button head ramrod. There are some small numbers stamped on several of the parts. The hammer is attached to a hinge on a rod that strikes the firing pin when the trigger is pulled. The barrel is blued while the breech block is brass and the trapdoor, back action lockplate, crescent buttplate, and trigger guard are casehardened. The full length straight grip stock is held by two barrel bands and a forend cap.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 40% of the original blue finish and case colors. The finish on the barrel is thinning and a brown patina forming. The barrel bands and forend cap have an aged gray patina with some oxidation. Some of the case colors can be seen on the trapdoor and lockplate which otherwise have a gray patina. The trigger guard has some visible case colors and otherwise a gray/brown patina. The buttplate has oxidation with some traces of visible case colors. The brass breechblock has an attractive aged "mustard yellow" patina. The stock has some variance in color and has some marks, scratches, and dents. The action is excellent.
