Description:

Designed for cavalry use, this short barreled flintlock has a sling ring bar attached to the brass barrel band running back to the rear sideplate screw. It has brass furnishings with a bright barrel, frizzen, and lockplate. A ramrod would have been carried separately. The lockplate is marked "S. Etienne/M fre Royale" with a "fleur-de-lis/S" proof mark above the S. The barrel is marked "M 1816" on the tang and "1821" with a "(fleur-de-lis)/P" mark on the left. The brass barrel band, sideplate, trigger guard, and buttplate are marked "*/H" as is the trigger guard tang. The frizzen is marked "2". The half stock has "87" and a groove on the left side of the butt and a fleur-de-lis with "V F Nff 1820" on the right side.

Rating Definition:

Near fine. The bright finished areas remain partially bright with a gray patina forming and various minor marks and some minor oxidation. The brass has an attractive bright aged patina with some oxidation on the barrel band and dings/dents on the buttplate. The stock has been arsenal repaired or pieced in front of the lockplate and has various minor scratches, marks, dents, and dings. There is a dent on the right side of the forend. The top jaw is absent. Mechanically fine.
