This is a representative example of a mid-WWII Japanese Type 99 sniper rifle that was manufactured at the Toriimatsu factory of Nagoya Arsenal, it that is complete with an original 4X "adjustable" sniper scope. The rifle is a standard Type 99 with the adjustable tangent rear peep sight with anti-aircraft wings, it is graduated from 3-15 (300-1500 meters) and has the inverted "V" front sight with the guards. The chrysanthemum on top of the receiver ring is intact and untouched with the Kana markings below that which are also intact. The rear receiver ring has the Nagoya arsenal proof over the serial number (2376). It has a later style stock with no drain hole, cupped buttplate and side mounted sling swivels. The scope is an original and very rare 4X "externally adjustable" sniper scope. These were developed late in WWII as a way to more easily zero the scope to the rifle. The lower side of the scope mount has various Kana markings with the rear portion of the tube marked: "4 X 7/NTC/KOGAKU/No.13638". The locking plate on the back is numbered "9133". It has the standard grid pattern reticle cross-hair calibrated from 6-14 (600-1400 meters) elevation below the center line with 20 degrees wind deflection on either side of the center line. This rifle has an original, matching, sniper bolt with a unnumbered extractor and firing pin with a mismatched cocking knob.
