Description:

This is an excellent original example of a Model 1903 National Match (NM) rifle that was manufactured by Springfield Armory in 1928. This rifle is listed by serial number as a NM rifle in the Springfield Research Service (SRS) records. The rifle has the post WWI gray-green parkerized finish and oil-finished "S" type walnut stock with grasping grooves and two reinforcing bolts. The lower barrel band has the correct blued finish. The rifle has the unique NM features which include: polished receiver rails, follower and bolt, headless cocking piece and reverse safety. The bolt body is electro-penciled with the rifle serial number "1262651". The barrel muzzle is stamped at 6-o'clock with the Springfield Armory star-gauge mark and the top of the barrel is stamped with the star-gauge number "G/661" in front of the rear sight base. The folding leaf rear sight has a polished leaf and lacks the 2750 yard 'volley notch' eliminated around 1919. The rear sight has the flat faced, post-WWI, windage and elevation knobs. The trigger is grooved. The buttplate has the deep, post-WWI knurling. The bolt has the 'J5' steel lot code stamped on the top of the handle and distinctive armory polishing marks on either side of the safety lug. The top of the receiver is roll-stamped: "U.S./SPRINGFIELD ARMORY/MODEL 1903./1262651". The barrel is stamped: "S.A." above the Ordnance 'Shell and Flame' insignia and the date "3-28". "H" is stamped on the bottom of the bayonet lug. The magazine cut-off has block letter markings and the "ON" side is polished bright. The safety lever also has the late, block letter, markings. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with a block letter "D.A.L." final inspection mark enclosed in a rectangle. The underside of the stock is stamped with an encircled, block, "P" proof mark behind the trigger guard. The rifle is complete with a WWI production Model 1905 sling, P.J. O'Hare rear sight cover and muzzle cover and a nickel-plated Krag oiler. Springfield Armory manufactured 2903 Model 1903 NM rifles in 1928; these were the last NM rifles that utilized the straight wrist "S" stock. Produced in very limited quantities to the highest standards, the Springfield Armory Model 1903 NM rifles were the finest and most accurate military rifles ever produced.

Rating Definition:

Excellent. The rifle is all original and shows only very minimal storage and handling wear. 98% of the original parkerized finish remains The barrel and receiver markings are crisp. The oil finished walnut stock and hand guard are both in excellent condition with minimal handling wear. The edges of the grasping grooves are sharp and the final inspection mark on the left wrist is crisp. This is a top of the line, Springfield Research Service documented, example of the very desirable U.S. shipped Model 1903 NM rifle. It would be hard to improve upon this excellent rifle.
