Description:

This is a very nice example of a desirable Model 1941 Johnson semi-automatic rifle, used during the early days of WWII. Born to a very affluent Massachusetts family, Melvin Johnson attend Harvard law school and was eventually commissioned as a USMC Officer in 1933. He was always fascinated with firearms and mechanical devices, so during his tour of duty he was posted as an observer at Springfield Armory. During this time after observed several poorly designed rifle being tested by the Army; he started work on his own design in 1935. This lead to the Model 1941, which was eventually tested against the M1 Garand. The Army adopted the M1 and most of Johnson rifle were sold to the Netherlands Purchasing commission. After the attack on Pearl Harbor the USMC acquired many of these rifles as a war expedient measure and later used them in the early Pacific island hopping campaigns. They had a couple of unique features: 1) they had a quickly removable barrel which was useful for Marine Paratroopers and Raiders, and 2) they had a 10 shot rotary magazine which could be quickly loaded with the five round stripper clips or single rounds in between battles to top off the magazine. The top of the receiver has four line, Johnson Automatics model markings, caliber and company address over serial number "B7689". The barrel is marked on the front of the barrel support "30-06/41" with the lug marked "5172E", with no other markings. The bolt is stamped with the serial number "B9101". The right side of the rear sight is stamped "METERS" with "M2" stamped on the left side. It is fitted with the original two-piece smooth walnut stock with a checkered steel buttplate and comes with a commercial leather sling.

Rating Definition:

Very good condition with 50% of the faded thin original parkerized finish (looks like tropical climate exposure) thinning on all the exposed metal surfaces. The forend and buttstock are also both in very good condition with the original finish still intact showing handling marks and light pressure dents overall. The barrel appears to be a Marine ordnance replacement as it has a small cross-pin cut on top in front of the barrel support. The overall condition of the rifle suggests that it was actually used in battle and returned home after the war (however we have no documentation to verify that).
