This is an example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle that was manufactured in 1908. The top of the barrel is marked with the two line address and patent information ahead of the rear sight with "NICKEL STEEL" and "40-70 W.C.F." (no authentication letter available) at the breech end on the left. The upper tang is marked "MODEL 1886/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK REG. IN U.S. PAT. OFF. " with one screw absent and the lower tang is marked with the patent dates directly behind the trigger and the serial number to the rear. It is equipped with a dovetailed front sight, adjustable rear sight (elevator absent), full length magazine tube, and is mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with a steel end cap and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle retains 60% of the finish on the barrel and magazine tube with some spots of oxidation. The other components have an overall mottled brown patina with various marks, scratches, and oxidation. The wood is good with some white marks on the butt near the buttplate as well as numerous minor dings, scratches, scrapes, and marks. Mechanically fine. Looks like it just came out of an attic!
