Description:

Winchester 1873 rifle manufactured in 1888. This Third Model rifle has the integral dust cover rail on the receiver and dust cover with serrated edges. The full octagon barrel has nickel-silver blade front sight and an adjustable sporting style rear sight with serrated edges. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped. Fitted with a walnut stock and forearm. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CONN. U.S.A./-KING'S IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29.1866.OCTOBER 16.1860-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber "32 W.C.F." is stamped between the rear sight and the receiver. "32 CAL" is stamped in script letters on the bottom of the brass cartridge elevator. "- MODEL. 1873.-" is stamped in fancy letters on the upper tang with foliate decorations at either end of the marking. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and the tang screw.

Rating Definition:

About good. The rifle retains some traces of the original finish on the loading gate and in some of the protected areas with an otherwise mottled brown patina with some scratches, pitting, and oxidation. The wood is good with some scratches and dings overall as well as hairline cracks on the forend extending back from the forend cap on each side and the bottom with some small chips at the junction with with front of the frame. There are some small chips, a hairline crack, and wear on the buttstock at the bottom rear. All markings are clear. Mechanically functions, but is slightly out of time, lever falls when not latched.
