Civil War Era Sharps New Model 1863 Saddle Ring Carbine Post War Converted to 50-70 Cartridge

This Sharps carbine has been post Civil War converted to fire the .50-70 Government center fire cartridge. These carbines were completely refurbished by Sharps during the conversion process and if needed the stocks were replaced with ones not having a patch box, which is the case with this example. Brass blade front sight and carbine style R.S. Lawrence patented folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards. The barrel has no visible marks aside from a single "C" on the left below the rear sigh. The lock is marked with the Sharps and Lawrence patent dates with the serial number on the upper tang. There are small "F" and "C" sub-inspectors mark on some parts. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with a saddle ring bar and ring on the left. The buttplate has an indent on the right side where a patchbox cover would have closed. A Springfield Research Service letter is included and explains that this carbine was one of 500 originally shipped to the government on July 3, 1863 for $30 each. A copy of the shipping ledger is also included.

ConditionGood as arsenal refurbished. The barrel retains 40% blue with a smooth brown patina on the exposed areas including the lock, trigger guard, buttplate, and barrel band. The lightly sanded, undersized, reoiled wood is fair with a few minor dents and handling marks and notches cut along the bottom edges. The markings are clear, and the action is excellent.
