Produced by the Burnside Rifle Company as subcontractors, 34,000 carbines were made c. 1865. Fitted with the distinctive 3-groove rifled barrel and forearm with single barrel band. Lug blade front and folding ladder rear sights. Casehardened frame, marked on top "MODEL/1865" and "SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT'D MARCH 6. 1860/MANUF D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE Co." and fitted with a Stabler magazine cutoff. The matching serial numbers can be found on the bottom of the barrel beneath the forearm and on the rear of the receiver. The left side barrel flat is marked "J.L.C.", there are "P" "F" and "M" markings on the top of the barrel under the barrel band, and most components have single letter sub-inspection marks. The saddle ring and bar are present. It is fitted with a smooth, straight grip stock and forearm with a single sling swivel on the bottom of the butt and a smooth buttplate with the removable tube magazine.

Rating Definition:

Very good as arsenal refinished. The carbine retains 50% of the finish. The barrel and lockplate are mostly bare with a mottled gray patina and some spots of finish. The receiver, lever, tang, and buttplate are very dark armory refurbished blue with some wear and marks. The revarnished wood is very good with some patches of varnish absent and various minor dings and scratches. The action is excellent.
