Description:

The back strap on this revolver is professionally period inscribed "Fr W Tremain Lanesboro, Pa". As the included research demonstrates, Tremain was a major and commander of the 89th New York Volunteer Infantry and fought in many battles and was ultimately killed in action while leading his troops in the assault on Fort Gregg on April 2, 1865 at the tail end of the Siege of Petersburg just one week before Lee's surrender. The Union success in taking Petersburg forced the Confederates to evacuate Petersburg and thus helped force the Confederate surrender at Appomattox. The No. 2 Army was one of the most popular personal side arms by Civil War officers and soldiers, as it was the only weapon able to fire self-contained cartridges and were owned by many Western legends including General Custer and Wild Bill Hickok who had a Model 2 on his person when he was killed. The top of the barrel rib is marked "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS." The serial number is marked on the butt and on the inside of the right grip panel. The grip panels are also marked in pencil "G.A. 1951" and "G.A. 1935". The assembly mark "D 2" is marked on the left side heel of the frame under the grip, the rear face of the barrel lug and the front face of the cylinder. It features a German silver blade fixed front sight and a 6-shot, unfluted cylinder marked with the Smith & Wesson 1855, 1859 and 1860 patent dates around the center. The frame has a spur trigger and two pins in the top strap. Fitted with smooth two-piece rosewood grips. Includes consignor research and Smith & Wesson letter.

Rating Definition:

Fair. The pistol has an overall brown patina with some minor scratches and marks. The barrel marking is clear while the markings on the cylinder are faint but visible. The grips are very good with some scratches and marks. Mechanically excellent.
