Description:

This Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting Rifle has a special order "Cast off" stock, receiver tang and lever. It has a pistol grip stock with the receiver tang, lever, pistol grip and comb bent to the right of the barrel axis. The rear sight dove-tail is located approximately 1 3/4 inches closer to the receiver than the standard dove-tail. The rifle is accompanied by a factory letter that describes it as: "Stock 1/4 inch more cast off and 1/2 inch more drop than sample stock". The letter further describes the sights as: "Rear sight back as far as possible". Other features are listed as: "Caliber: 40-65, Barrel Type: 1/2 Octagon, Trigger: Plain, Checkered Stock, Pistol Grip, 1/2 Magazine", and "Shotgun butt, Rubber butt plate." The letter states that this rifle was shipped from Winchester on December 23, 1896. The rifle has a blued half-round/half-octagon barrel, half-magazine, bolt and loading gate with color casehardened forearm cap, receiver, hammer, trigger and lever. The forearm and pistol grip stock are deluxe, fancy grain, walnut with "Style H" checkering. The stock has a round pistol grip bottom and is fitted with a black, hard rubber, checkered, shotgun buttplate with the round Winchester logo in the center. The barrel has a standard, sporting style front sight with nickel-silver blade and a buckhorn, sporting style, rear sight with serrated edges and a screw-adjustable center notch. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation, "40-65 W.F.C." is located on the left barrel flat below the rear sight. The upper tang is roll-stamped: "-MODEL 1886-". The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates. The serial number, "111156" is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the rear tang screw. This rifle is the ultimate special order Winchester rifle and may be the only Model 1886 Winchester with this unique, special order, off-set stock.

Rating Definition:

Fine. The rifle is all original and retains 40% of the faded blue and casehardened finish. The balance of the blue on the barrel has a dull age patina. Most of the blue finish is present on the breech bolt. The fire-blue finish on the loading gate has faded to silver-gray. The case colors on the forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever have a silver-gray patina. There are scattered spots of surface rust on the metal components. The fancy grain walnut stock and forearm are both in fine overall condition with moderate handling wear. The original, high polish, piano finish has dulled with age and the checkered panels show handling wear. Both the stock and forearm have scattered light handling marks. This is a one-of-a-kind, fully documented, special order, Winchester Model 1886 Fancy Sporting rifle. Writer cannot recall seeing another documented example!
